Roy Klehm of Illinois
registered this cultivar on behalf of
fellow hosta hybridizer,
Dr. David Reath of Michigan
in 1998. It is
a sport of H. 'Gold Regal' with a dark green center and yellow marginal variegation. The large size (27 inches high) mound of foliage is topped by medium lavender
flowers are borne in July.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), this cultivar "...differs from the similar cultivar,
'Alex Summers', in having a margin that more truly reflects the
color of its mother plant, 'Gold Regal'. The margin of 'David Reath' changes from chartreuse to medium gold during the growing
season while 'Alex
Summers' develops a brighter, more sharply
contrasting gold edge."
