Registered
by
Ian Scroggy
of Bali Hai Nursery in Northern Ireland in 2009, this cultivar is a seedling of H. 'Ogon Koba'.
It is a miniature size hosta only 3 inches high by 13
inches wide with golden yellow foliage. The leaves are slightly cupped, slightly twisted, moderately flat and
dull on top. Tubular shaped flowers bloom from June into
July on scapes up to 13 inches tall.
According to the registration materials: "...compact growth habit, ground hugging, can withstand full
sun...greenish yellow to golden-yellow as season progresses..."
Mikiko Lockwood in an article on The Hosta Library titled,
A Little About Japanese Hosta Terms defines the term koba as small leaf,
'Koba Gibōshi' or
H. sieboldii and the term ogon or oogon as gold or yellow.
The
Hosta Journal (2018 Vol. 49 No. R) states that this
cultivar was originally registered as 'Bali Hai' which was a
typographical error that has now been corrected.
