This
cultivar is a second generation Tardiana-type seedling was registered by the
British Hosta and
Hemerocallis Society (BHHS) on behalf of the originator,
Eric Smith in 1988.
The plant grows into a large size hosta about 19 inches high
and 44 inches wide with intensely blue foliage. The leaves have
thick substance, are slightly wavy and flat at the base. Pale
bluish lavender flowers bloom in late July.
According to
The Hostapedia by Mark Zilis (2009), "As one of the best of the
Tardianas, 'Blue Wedgwood' ranks highly among all hostas for its
blue foliage color, growth rate, and substance."
"Plant named H. 'Blue Wedgewood' by
Summers, alluding to the wedge-shaped leaves, but registered as H. 'Blue
Wedgwood', which is correct, referring to the light blue color of Jasperware
made by Wedgwood & Sons. Both names are in use. Due to distribution errors some
of the plants cultivated under this name are actually H. 'Blue
Dimples', which does not have wedge-shaped leaves."
